Description

I found this wonderful burrowing wolf spider and her young one day on a walk and I took quite a few pictures of her. While looking for a bit of information and the scientific name I found out that the chelicerae of Lycosa turn a reddish color when threatened which I was completely oblivious while taking the shots. It’s amazing how much we miss at first glance.

I just watched a program on TV that explained the reason the babies crawl up on mom. Seems after they eat all the liquid left in the egg sackk they are still too you to venture out and hunt their own food so the mother sacrifices herself. She beats her underside on the ground, signaling the babies to crawl up. She oozes out her body fluids to feed the young until they can be on their own. Amazing! Great shot here.

Excellent shot, I don't find it creepy at all, the red really makes this a unique shot, good focus and lighting, too bad you had her upset but no harm done and it made for a beautiful shot!

That's a fanatastic photo! She's an amazing critter, and I love the babies all clustered around the burrow. Nice job!
