Description

At 6 a.m. I awoke half an hour before the alarm, tired to the bone, half a night spent dreaming alone. Your voice spinning a lullaby across the nine hundred miles. I noticed your moments of silence, filling the void alone, never realizing you were washing your car. Sometimes I wonder are you just listening for the music my voice rises and falls to? It's easy to sleep to, I say, so many words running out of my spigot all over your floor. At 6 a.m. I awoke before the alarm. I thought of mopping my words from your mind before you awoke; considered it- as you lay peacefully in your bed all these nine hundred miles away- half your night spent as you stay dreaming. These words alone are nothing; dried to the bone, I blow them away, my lips forming a perfect "O". We are so close now, you don't need words to see inside my head or a lullaby to hear the music plucking strings in my heart. Driving in the night we dance across Kansas and Arkansas and Louisiana and Alabama, our bodies turning in the moonlight between one cell tower and the next. True, no day goes by now that I don't count. But I wonder how to soothe a pain in your heart I can not touch or kiss away. This is why words fall short and dry. I want only to hold your hand as the rain comes, as the change comes. In the silence you will hear my breathing- heart beating- and know what all the world's words can never, ever say. ---------------------------- Image excerpt from original artwork of J. Kester, 2007
