Description

Here's another shot I took on Friday. This is the Deception Pass Bridge. It was opened on July 31, 1935, so it will be 72 years old on Tuesday! The deck is 180 feet above the water (depending on the tides) and let me tell you - it's pretty scary being up there on foot! The bridge deck is only 28 feet wide. That's two 11-foot wide car lanes and two three-foot wide sidewalks. There is NO room for error up there! Not only that, but there's a lot of traffic going about 40 mph. The bridge shakes, and when a big truck goes by, you can really feel it. I did go out a little way, but discovered I have an aversion to heights I didn't know I had! I'll post a picture I took from up there, just so you know I really did it! Edit Note: Oops! I got all wrapped up in what I was talking about, and forgot to tell you where this is! Deception Pass Bridge spans the channel between Whidbey Island and Fidalgo Island in Washington State. If you look at a map, Deception Pass is West of Mount Vernon, Washington, and East of Victoria, British Columbia. (Thanks, Randy!)

Anything for a heart stopping photo, eh, Tara! Because of my acrophobia, this would absolutely freeze me to the spot, with sweat pouring from my armpits, hands and brow, dizzy spells, vertigo, ad infinitum. But then again, being aware of my fear of heights, I wouldn't go up there in the first place! I leave that to adventurers like yourself, throwing all caution to the wind for the perfect capture. OMG, how do those guys ever build skyscrapers and such? In any event, another fantastic POV and DOF, along with the colors, clarity and contrast, in this magnifico shot!

Beautiful capture. I remember the water being just that color. I've heard the tide through here is very impressive. That would be fun to watch from the bridge. I don't have much of a fear of heights, but I have a great fear of dropping my camera. :-)
