Description

this church was finded in the 1700's. I do not know if the building is that old. As you see there graves right up next to the church I never saw this. I read about it. Most the time it some one that give a lot of money to be bury there. I did see one of the top prist that work there was one of them bury next to the church. I took a photo of the oldest grave I ever saw 1817. It in French and I like to know what it reads. Plus I saw the date and how it was writen on the grave. Wonder too if this the way the French still write the date like this or is this a old way of writeing dates? I know that the way of writeing chages and meaning of words too as time goes on. just look at a dictionary of the 1860's and one now. thanks for looking and comments

Wonderful collage of images, Jocko! And, oh yes, I know St. Martinville! I have many relatives from around Donaldsonville..and used to fish as a kid with my dad around Cocodrie...And, nothing like Mardi Gras in Mamou! So, I know this neck of the woods. So many treasures :)

Fascinating collage. As a history-major in college I used to visit alot of graveyards to wander about reading dates and inscriptions. It is fascinating to watch how the language changes over time. Very interesting photos!

A very impressive picture for my mind !!! The first tomb is made in 1848, At the moment of the revolution of 1848 in France! At the XIXth century, this woman was looked as very old !!! Great thanks !!!

Beautiful captures all, Jock. A superb collage. The church, its statues and graves are very lovely. So much history is here for you to look upon. Up at Whity Abbey and St Mary's Church there are graves right up to the wall like this. I will ask about them next time I am up there, perhaps important people are buried closer to the Church. I cannot read french but Jean-Louis or Janis will be able to tell you what is said here. I will be very interested to know. I think it is the name of a lady then it says wife of John.... Hugs. Di.

I thought they buried people above ground in Louisiana? I was in New Orleans once years ago, and that's what they told us. Great shot, Jocko!

Fine collage of an old church that appears in darn good shape after all these centuries, probably due to ample donations from the church goers. Nice colors and clarity throughout your photos, my friend. With a cemetery that old there has to be some ghosts and hauntings in the area.
