Description

This is the entrance tunnel to Ft. Morgan (Gulf Shores, Alabama), built in 1833 to guard the east side of the entrance to Mobile Bay. It is one of the longest continuously occupied military installations on US soil having been decommissioned in the 1960s (I think). It was used in the Civil War and was heavily damaged as a target of the Monitor-class metal-hulled war vessels. It continued to be active through WWI and WWII. The "Battery Duportail" was built of concrete (contrasts to the original red brick) to house 2 "disappearing guns", which could fire a 15 inch shell 20 miles. The recoil was engineered such that after firing the gun would recoil back and down below the level of the wall, thus "disappearing" from spotters' view. The guns are long gone but the fort will remain for many years to come. Thank you for your comments and birthday wishes on my last post! Deb

I like this view, from the tunnel opening into the open space and that huge bunker. Very cool.
