Description

Despite what they say, there is the occasional thunderstorm in Dalmatia (region in Croatia along the Adriatic Sea). This storm was a welcome sight as it took the humidity out of the air. For the remainder of our stay it was hot but dry (33-34C: 91-93F). This is the first time I tried and managed to catch lightning. My first thought was to try to see and snap it - who was I kidding? The next was to randomly take shots under normal camera settings - again no luck. Then I set the camera for a long exposure (8 seconds worked best), put the camera on a railing and took the shot without wiggling the camera. This gave me 8 seconds to get lucky and get a bolt in view. I got 4 or 5 good shots. The lighting is so fast and so bright that it comes out clear while the otherwise dark surroundings look brighter than they actually were but still look good. I'd be interested in hearing other methods that you know of.

When I was in coastal Croatia they had a thunderstorm every Thursday! Weird eh? Fantastic captures! I think I'd have tried continuous shot but I've never tried to take any lightning shots yet so I can't really help you here.

Some links.... http://www.cimms.ou.edu/~doswell/ltgph.html http://www.lightningphotography.com/tips.html http://www.weatherscapes.com/techniques.php?cat=lightning&page=lightning_tips http://www.dphotojournal.com/photography-tips-how-to-photograph-lightning/ These were from a "How to shoot lightning" thread from a while ago....I'm not sure if the thread is still there. I put these in my favourites. Great photos mate. In a week I'm moving into the hills of Perth. Great views of Perth from up there. I can't wait for some thunderstorms.
