Description

"'Won't you come on over for dinner?' ,said the spider to the bee." ~~~~~

Going to my car from the house this morning, I probably would have walked right into this scene you see before you. The spider and bee were at about forehead level on me. Luckily, Lisa saw it and warned me, and encouraged me to take a photo even though I was running late. I didn't want to take the time to get my C8080 out and set up a tripod, etc., so I pulled my tiny Pentax from my briefcase and held it up to take some exposures. It was rather frustrating because of the height of the web and the breeze was causing it to sway back and forth unpredictably, not good when taking a macro photo. So I took as many exposures as time would allow from a few different angles, and for the last shots she even held up a leaf behind them so that the white of the front of our house would not show. I got to work and downloaded the contents of my camera. Most of the photos were too blurred or the depth of field was centered in the wrong spot. This was the final photo. The moral of the story? Always take that one last shot. ;'] Anyone recognize the type of spider? ------

Mmmm, what a tasty treat... I'd say your little Pentax did a fine job -- at least on the last try. ;o) Great find & capture ... and the leaf was an inspired addition!

What a lovely little spider with a fantastic heart. To go up against a bee is very brave even if its caught in a web. Great shot and what luck, huh?

My guess is an "Orb Weaver", they really like to build big beautiful webs around houses, generally at the height you indicate. Nice spiders... they are big enough to see and be aware of so I leave them alone up until cold weather when they seem to try to make their way into the house... Really great capture...ummmm.. photo I mean... never know what drama is going on in the yard... ever see an ant lion? =)

It was worth being late for work to get a shot of this life and death struggle. You can see how the web has caught him in its grip. An amazing shot.

Said the spider to the bee? Strange, I was always under the impression that it was "spider to the fly." Anyway, good lighting, clarity and textures in this macro considering the unstable conditions. And, I have no idea as to the identity of the arachnid.
