Description

I found this spider in a mix of heather and gras in the woods behind my house. It's a spider of the Salticidae family, commonly referred to as jumping spiders - they jump from straw to straw as a means to move around, and they jump to catch prey. This one is a female of the species Evarcha arcuata (as is so often the case with spiders, no common name exists). You can't really be 100% sure of the species of most spiders unless you study them with a field microscope or a strong lens - which I have not - but I'm as sure as I can be about the species without catching it. She's about 6mm long with extremely sharp eyesight and binocular vision to determine distance. You'll get a good look at her eyes in a couple of pictures that I'll post in a few days :) Canon 20d with Canon MP-E 65mm and Twin-lite flash.
