Description
In 1977, when I was 12 years old and I was in the 7th grade, in the Drawing classes we were learning about colours. After the theoretical lesson, the teacher told us to make a drawing with lots of colors. All my colleagues were making flowers and houses and similar stuff. I thought about doing a rainbow but I also wanted something different. So, I thought about making a rainbow from an original perspective: as it would be seen if the viewer would be under it. I knew it was physically impossible, due to the way a rainbow is formed. But that didn't stop me and I did it. It was similar to this image.
I heard the teacher commenting the work of my colleagues, with praises or suggestions for improvement. When he got to my desk, all he said was "Hm" and turned his back. That was it, my first feedback to an original work. Not even a "hmmmmm...". Not a word, except for "hm". Well, in my 12 year old mind a quick link was established between originality and lack of interest and, therefore, failure. I continued making drawings but for 10 years I didn't create anything original.
Now, 30 years have passed since that episode and so I thought about paying a special tribute to that teacher by making a digital version of my painting at the time...
Tech stuff:
This is a direct render, no postwork, except for frame.
I had several possibilities to make the rainbow. In the end, I decided to model it in Zbrush. It's a simple plane bent in a U shape. I made the texture map in Photoshop, by simply using the gradient tool with a color spectrum, with increasing transparency at the ends and a gaussian blur applied. I made the layer 75% transparent, exported it as PNG and in Vue I used the color and alpha information. Then I added some spectral clouds and some Linda Daireaux grass, and that was it. The camera is on the ground, looking up, of course.
Thanks for watching!

I like this. Great POV and yes, very unusual and original but outstanding. Try out new things, unusual things, out of the box thinking makes th the world more interesting. Thanks for sharing your Visions with us.

I like it. I, too had an identical experience in Eighth grade (age 13), except I continued my originality underground and just stopped showing my art to anyone. It took decades for me to open up, and show anyone, so I could get any feedback. Just because it's an impossible shot, doesn't mean that somewhere at sometime this image couldn't exsist. I can count at least three scenarios where this view is VERY plausible, so don't sell yourself short!

Terrific composition! Very well done!

I love the POV on this :)

oh my god, those clouds are beautiful. you really should write a tutorial. the rainbow is a bit unnaturally intense, and i like the surreal, technicolor feel that gives this piece. great perspective and composition. sometimes, simplicity is the best route.

I'm glad you continued and it's too bad that one person had such a profound effect on you but maybe it made you better? We do tend to dwell on the negative instead of the positive. One negative response can wipe out 20 positive ones. I love your originality and it's a narrow-minded teacher that could not comment on how broad your talent is.

This is a fantastic Idea and excellent render

Very imaginative, a great POV. A pox on your teacher LOL. I envy you I don't have the knack of originality, please don't stifle it anymore, it is great to see.
