Description

Honestly - I wasn't sure whether to put this under "Flowers/Plants" or "Humor" (or perhaps "Transportation?") This shot is from one of my trips to Ann's wonderful garden. There were a few more buds above these on the stalk, but it wasn't a very well-composed image. The flower was growing up out of the top of the frame, and the background was pretty horrid. Scuffy dirt and grass, with the water hose snaking through the photo. (Ann has a purple garden hose, which is pretty interesting and unusual, but it just didn't make for good photography.) So I blissfully went around the flower with the lasso, taking out everything I didn't want. Got all done, painted the background black, and just started to laugh! This didn't turn out anything like what I had imagined, but it was so funny I just had to share it with you. ............. Oops! It just occurred to me - the expression "three on the tree" might be a bit coloquial, and may lose something in the translation. For those of you who don't get the reference, I'll explain. I'm not trying to be mysterious! This refers to the type of transmission and gear shift one has in one's vehicle. If you have a standard transmission, rather than an automatic, you have a shifting lever somewhere in your car. If it's a four-speed, with the gear shift on the floor next to you, it would be known as "four on the floor." If the shifting lever is up on the steering wheel column, it's usually only a three-speed, and is known as "three on the tree." (The "tree" being the steering column.) If you have an automatic transmission, nobody cares, and they don't call it anything. I think it's a guy thing.

Lovely pic, but you've got me even more confused now....... I thought 'Three on the tree WAS an automatic!"...(I'm definitely a 'Four on the floor' type!)

Whatever happened to the poor flower? It seems so isolated. Actually, it doesn't look so bad; maybe it's the black background that makes it appear odd. But, on further examination, it resembles a watercolor painting. BTW, I have a manual/standard transmission, with the gear shift on the floor, and technically it's five on the floor, if you include the neutral position. And, I can't eat gorp anymore, which is really distressing.

You did a wonderful job of isolating the subject, Tara. I can only imagine your surprise when you saw the result. This is truly unique and worthy of your gellery.

It's definitely a guy thing. When I saw the title in the ebot I thought you had a photo of an old car. :-) But this is much nicer than any 40-year-old car. It does remind me of the 1960 Ford Falcon I learned to drive on, though.

LOL! Now I understand very well after reading your explanation. My father had an Opel Record with "three on tree" many years ago and I learned to drive car with such one too. HAHA! and you think your flower looks like such one. Ok I see what you mean, but beside that, it is a lovely shot and a beautiful flower and postwork. :)

Yes, this flower's hitch hiker does kind of remind one of a gear shift. Unusual. Love the colors!
