Description

Two Iron clads and a monitor at rest on the Missippi on a calm day. The moniter is the USS Winnebago one of four of a class of shallow draft Monitors built by James Eads and two others. The front turret was steam powered which elevated and lowered the guns as well as checking the recoil, returned the guns to battery and opened and closed the shuuters on the turret. The aft turret was an Erickson type which was armstrong powered. The single turret boat is the Neosho. It was also built by Eads and was designed after the success of the Monitor. When launched it only drew 3' draft so they added 1/2 inch armor plating to the deck! The third is a City Class gunboat The USS Baron de Kalb originally the USS St. Louis. The models were done by me in Wings The buildings were taken off the Web and modified. (The Farmhouse was a lighthouse from Cornicopia)

Wow.. very nicely done... The Mississippi is not usually this calm.. is it perhaps a small channel off from the main stream?

Nice models. Good details. Although I think you have it backwards...it's 2 monitors (even the double-turreted vessels were called monitors, as a generic term honoring the first vessel of the type and name) and an ironclad... although, technically, they are ALL ironclads...but who's quibbling...they are a great addition to the ironclad models set, started by The Hankster. Keep up the good work.

Great scene with the Iron clads. The landscape works well too for the period.

Excellent renders of Federal gunboats of the Mississippi River. I can see why you liked my view of the USS Cairo.
