Description

Nikon 7900 image. For such a little spider (1/4" across), he sure has a big name, lol. I have seen these on a number of occasions and they all were colored just like this one; however, while researching an identification of him, I kept seeing a lot of images that showed distinct red coloring on the big spikes that are black in this individual. Not sure if this is a subspecies, a cousin, or what exactly. They may come in both color variations for all I know, lol. The 'shell' looking upper part is in fact a hard shell with lots of tiny hairs everywhere. It is a bit unusual looking from what we normally think of as spiders. I thought it was interesting and hope you do also. Thanks to those who take the time to comment. Lee

Wow..... what a neat image! What an unusual specimen! (And does anyone else think this looks like the spider has turned into an arachnoid 'Jason Vorhees'?)

Great shot Lee. With this coloring I wonder what plant it hides on for safety.
