I can't say I'm an expert on Maya, but this looks very different, if you'd asked me if it had been PS'd I would have said yes, excellent originality.

Imagine Paint FX as a combination of painting and 3D, you basically paint parameters onto surfaces, in this case various plants! Different than object instancing, and not really photorealistic (in this case, anyway), but an interesting blend of 2D painting with 3D scenes...
