Description

Nikon 7900 image. About a week or so ago, I posted an image of another Crablike Spiny Orb Weaver. That one had black spikes and a white shell. I mentioned then that while researching an identification of it on-line I had noticed a number of images of this species showed red spikes instead of black ones. I have seen dozens and dozens of this species and not a one of them from itty bitty to full size ever had anything but black spikes and white bodies. Today while venturing out in the 104 F temperatures, I saw this tiny (1/8 inch dia.) guy from the bottom side. He was so small, I almost decided to just pass on by since I see so many bigger ones; however for some odd reason I moved to the other side of the web and looked at him. Imagine my surprise when I saw all this red, lol. I still don't know why some are red with black spikes, some are white with black spikes and some are white with red spikes. MrsLubner mentioned that she has even seen yellow ones. Thanks to those who take the time to comment. BTW, if anyone who is reading this can help in identifying caterpillars, I need help in naming the species in my posting for tomorrow. Lee

What an unusual little fella and a superb macro you have captured to allow us to see all the details. I'm pleased that you found a red one - now you will probably see hundreds of them each day - isn't that always the case??! LOL!. A great shot and looking forward to your caterpillar tomorrow. Hugs. xx
