Neli Ratlar commands the "Galactic Titan", the newest and probably the most powerful warship in Charlemagne's interstellar strike-force. Her superior, StarCommodore Mikita Drell, has just supplied Neli with a new Weapons Officer, a girl by the name of Veldra Leng. Neli shares the widespread spacers' prejudice against "Planetsiders", those who transfer to SpaceForce from the Planetary Defence Force, as Veldra has, having allegedly completed her SpaceForce training in record time. Neli's suspicions are further aroused when she first sets eyes on Veldra, because the girl is the spitting image of Mikita Drell herself. Finding jobs for her relatives is not supposed to form part of a StarCommodore's duties... And yet - Neli was W.O. when Mikita was her starship commander; she likes Mikita and, more to the point, admires her. If Veldra resembles her cousin only in her cheerful face and curvy figure, that won't help the 'ship much in combat. On the other hand, if the newcomer shares even half of Mikita's ability and sharp intelligence, she'll be a true asset. Neli sets her new W.O. some searching tests, which Veldra passes with eye-poppingly high scores. Soon Neli Ratlar is speaking with pride and affection of "My Planetsider". Only half-jokingly, she suggests to Mikita: "If we're intending to go to war any time soon, Mik, now would be a good time.
