Description
When Neli Ratlar, officer commanding the "Galactic Titan", discovered that her armoury was well-stocked with HovPods, she almost threw a fit. The HovPod, or "Hover Podium" to give it its full name, was supposed to help soldiers deliver an airborne assault, but it's so slow and unmanoeuvrable that no soldier without a particularly highly-developed death-wish wants to go near one. While Neli showed her new Weapons Officer around the Titan, she was surprised when Veldra Leng asked, seemingly out of the blue, if she might have a 'Pod for her personal use. This was before Neli learnt to treasure Veldra. Although she granted the request, it seemed to confirm her initially low opinion of "planetsiders".
Then Veldra turned up at the first tactical briefing, complete with her hovpod, and Neli realised what it was for. Veldra is so short that she can barely see over the edge of the Tactical Table. Although Neli hadn't shown her the Table, Veldra had spotted it, noted the problem and, in her characteristic way, had instantly dreamt up a fix for it. Elevated by her HovPod, she can see everything - and she really does see everything.
Now Veldra's cousin Mikita, to her huge relief, has been promoted once again, back into an active command, as C-in-C, Orion Approaches, with "Galactic Titan" as her flagship. Neli is so glad that she didn't follow her first instinct and eject all of the HovPods from the airlocks, to give her 'ship target practice. Even if Mikita insists that she is a good half inch ("maybe, a bit more") taller than Veldra, she has gratefully accepted the gift of a HovPod for the Tac' Table sessions. It's wonderful to see the two cousins whizzing around the table, emitting fiendish giggles as they cook up some outrageously devilish tactical solution together.
Right now, it's regular manoeuvres with forces from Hengist. Hengist and Charlemagne are the oldest and staunchest allies going, but they still both want to win. Neli doesn't rate Hengist's chances too highly, this time, though...
