Description
A 1940 DENNIS 'BIG 6' Pump Escape GNB 217
This appliance was supplied to Manchester Fire Brigade in April 1940 and cost £1620 British Pounds($3,264.56 cents US, €2,385.92 Euro).
The chassis is a Dennis 'Big 6' low load line model and the original engine was a Meadows 6 Cylinder 115 bhp petrol unit. A Dennis 800gal/min(3,600ltr/min) pump is fitted and there is a 40 gal(180ltr) first aid tank.
The bodywork is to MFB(Manchester Fire Brigade) specification and carries a Morris 'AJAX' 60 foot(18mtr) wooden wheel escape ladder. It originally served at London Road, Fire Station.
In 1958(I was ten years old) the Meadows engine was replaced by a Gardner 6LW Diesel engine, after which the appliance served on the reserve fleet and - later - the training school.
The appliance is on loan to the GMFS Museum by Mr Brian Daniel of Hazel Grove, Cheshire, UK.
