Description
I finally figured out that manual focus works better than auto focus for these fast birds, for me anyway. Auto focus just works too hard and overcompensates. Only problem is that manual focus is not that easy, either! This is about a 65 percent crop and I cloned out the bit of red plastic flower on the right side. This one's not quite there yet, but it's fun trying. First time I have gotten an in flight shot or tried manual focus. Also the first Ruby I have seen this year.
Thanks very much for looking and thanks for your previous comments!

This is excellent. I tried the auto focus on my camera with hummers too and it was a failure. The manual focus was better but it took more time to set up my shot and get a focus lock...still the quality of the shot was better. I also used the sports mode on mine to even further hone in on a still shot. This is an excellent shot! I have two different sorts of hummers... Anna's hummingbird and the Ruby Throated hummingbird.

Oooh, oooh, oooh, a one in a trillion shot, dear CavLady! Fantastic POV in this capture of the elusive bird in flight, with wings flapping at faster-than-light speed, not to mention the fine clarity, soft lighting and textures of the tiny avian. Just terrific.

Great timing and capture. Fine details are visible and the feet are just amazing. I seldom use auto focus on my little pocket Nikon for the exact reasons you mentioned - too slow and sometimes unable to lock on the subject, especially in high contrast situations such as spiders on a web and silhouetted against a sky or humming birds/Dragonflies, etc hovering. This is a pretty dang nice shot of a beautiful little flying critter. Thanks for sharing. Lee
