Description

Not long ago I posted an image of a Gulf Fritillary Butterfly Egg. I found it because I watched the Butterfly lay it. As is often the case, once you cross a threshold, subsequent progress is enabled. After finding that first egg, I have since found several more varieties of eggs and decided to make this small collection of shots. As was the case with The Gulf Fritillary egg, I later watched a Goat Weed Butterfly lay one and managed to get a shot of that egg. That picture is at the top of the image. I also recently posted an image of a Dragonfly about to become a meal for a very pregnant Argiope spider. Within a day or so of getting that shot, I noticed the spider (now greatly reduced in size)had strung some webbing into a clump of tree foliage. Upon investigation, I saw a huge egg case she had constructed and filled up. Over the course of a week or so, I checked on it every couple of days and imagine my surprise when I found a 2nd case within a few inches of the first. I have included an image of the two cases in this collection as the 2nd photo. The 3rd photo in this collection shows a couple of egg cases of some unknown little critter. These are very hard and are firmly cemented to the stem of a Passionflower vine. The last photo shows a group of unknown insect eggs laid in a mass on a Goatweed leaf. The small Crab spider was actually some distance away but as I chased it with the camera, it eventually climbed onto the same leaf as the eggs. In fact, I didn't see the eggs until I turned the leaf over to get a shot of the spider. I don't think the spider has any connection to the eggs. UPDATE 9/1/07: Since this image was posted, some of the eggs in the bottom pic have hatched. As I assumed, they have nothing to do with the little Crab Spider who is near by. I was able to identify the new nymphs as members of the Stink Bug Family but I have not been able to narrow it down to a species. The Nymphs certainly look a lot like those of the Harlequin Bug but the eggs are definitely different so I need more research or help in getting an exact classification. They are shown in my posting on 9/1/07 for those interested. Thanks to those who take the time to comment. The zoomed image is quite a bit larger than this one and will give a much better look at these little gems. Lee

You really have a good eye. For most of the summer I thought I had a bug free yard. Recently I have made it a point to sit and watch for the slightest movement in my plants. I have discovered I do have bugs... :-) I love these eggs. I do worry about damage to the plants when these bugs hatch but for now, they are beautiful and welcome. Great job with the post work and presentation!

It always amazes me, what you find in that 25 acres, I noticed the local Magpie family perched on the roof of my shed, after watching the adults peck away at the apex for a while I went out and tried to see what they where after, I couldn't find anything there. A couple of days later they are back again doing the same, so this time I walked out to have another look, they flew on to next doors roof. When I got up close, I could see a little furry sack, you guessed it, spider eggs. I never got a shot anything like these though, absolutely fantastic. Bravo!!!!!

I agree that you have a fine eye for such tiny things. I have seen some but never looked at them as something of interest.but I will now. I walked nearly 5 miles today at Samuel farm taking pictures.could not get one dragonfly to cooperate.I guess it was already hot an they were too nervous to hang around for me to get close
