Description

She's the last ship of the Spanish-American War. The cruiser Olympia was Commodore Dewey's flagship at the battle of Manila Bay on May 1, 1898. She mounts four 8 inch guns, ten 5 inchers, and six pounders to chase away torpedo boats. Visit her in Philadelpha, Pennsylvania. There is also a neat Gato class Guppified submarine("Bacuna") and a clipper ship right next door. The battleship USS New Jersey sits across the river in Camden, NJ. I had to montage two photos together to get this view because I was carrying my "tourist" Olympus StylusEpic instead of my trusty, but bulky old Canon AE1.

IIRC this is the last 'protected' cruiser afloat. AVRORA in Russia is of the same period but I believe she is more correctly classified as a 'broadside' cruiser. Nice capture. The old 'Victorian' peacetime color schemes were certainly interesting.

what an impressive ship and history behind her. I have been at Manila bay a few times. they have a passenger ship berthed there now and turned it into a hotel

Great capture Rog. I have been on her a couple of times. Looking at her, it will cost a lot to keep maintaining her. I also been on the Gato class sub next to her. Apparently that sub picked up Bush senior when he was downed during WWII.
