Description
This is the Maersk Responder,(Cable Layer). at anchor in China ready for working the South China sea
Photo was taken approaching the ship after a loooooong flight from the UK.
7,000 tons approx
2 MAN 10,500 BHP Engines
It also has 2 Bow & 2 Stern Thrusters, which together with its very powerful main engines enable it to remain static over a fixed position in the water in almost any weather with less than I foot deviation in any direction
The ship is also equipped with a state of the art global positioning system which senses the sea condition, wind and current and sends a demand to any or all of the thrusters and engines in order to maintain position.
The yellow sled in the photo lays the cable, the curved arm on the left folds over to the back and the fibre optic cable passes through it. Water at 200+ psi flows from the black pipe and is forced through small jets at the front, this blasts a path in the seabed and the weight of the sled (90 Tons) being towed digs itself into the seabed to a depth of about 8/10 metres, the cable flowing from the arm into the trench is then covered by the sand etc flowing back into the trench.
I’m sure you all understand that, anybody want a job?
Thanks for all your views & comments

Sounds easy peesy, where do I sign? Couple of great shots showing good detail, plus interesting detailed information, makes for excellent report. Nice one Dave, I for one find these type of shots fascinating, showing things not normally seen by the general populace. I would go as far as saying, a picture of the boiler room on board yours would be nice to see. Thanks for sharing this one. Bravo!!!!!
