Description

This was supposed to be the same wall but with butterflies. I’ve had a crap connection lately and yesterday half way thru the upload, or when almost finished we lost the signal. Back to the wall…. The wall runs around a fair portion of the fields at the back of the house, its maybe a mile in total length, 8 feet high and obviously some farmers labour of love 200 years ago. For some strange reason its not built from granite like a similar one at the other end of the property or the house. The house is a listed Grade2 listed building which includes all other structures included in the deeds. To replace even one stone in the wall I need to apply for planning permission which for listed buildings it can take months. I’ve tried to find out the origin of the stone, so far with no success, (any ideas Jeff?) some people have suggested Northumberland stone and some even stone from Wales due to the apparent oxide content. All I know is that it takes ages to do the “strap pointing” 3 years to date to do almost a mile when I’m home on leave, sharing that with the re building of the two barns and then family time. The house was purchased many years ago as an investment but I think we have decided that now its almost ready we are going to move. Back to the wall…again…. I planted about 7 different types of buddlei along the wall and in late summer because the wall is south facing butterflies gather because being almost two feet thick it retains heat on the cooler summer evenings, the picture below was supposed to show several of the species including cabbage whites, red admirals, a blue variety and a lesser spotted Red Rickrots, but for some reason I cant find it, so you just get the wall lol I’m a little disorganized and frustrated at my connection lately and now Tracey is having some gigglebyte problem yet again, I reckon it’s a bug infestation, good thing you cant hear her language though lol Thanks for stopping by and taking the time to leave comments Have a great weekend Dave

Gigglebyte problem? Language? Bug infestation? LMAO... Ok, it's more than a gigglebyte prob... I would never ever curse... and it's bug free... Ok, you can believe two of those! Back to the wall... I still havent got a pic of a bloody butterfly. Hope Jeff or someone can help us with the stone, will make the history of the place easier to record, and helps us answer questions like we think we know what we're talking about... Lol... Seriously, you've done an amazing job on the rens so far, and the girls and I are just about ready for the move now! Anddddddddd, now everyone can see that it's you that does the garden, and knows the plants, not me! Lol... Loves ya xxXxx

A very nice wall. Much better looking than my 'pink' brick wall.

Sorry can't help on where it came from, but it is dressed stone cut from solid rock, not made in a kiln like what I used to do. I've had that many jobs the list would be as long as your arm. Back to the wall, that saying itself brings back memories(must not go into that though). Nice wall, I would go with the Wales theory myself, they believe thats where Stone Henge originates from. I don't envy you the pointing Dave, you carry on mate, I have done my share of that. There seems to be a couple there thats spalling(flaking) which suggests plenty of oxide thats where the rusty look comes from. Certainly full of texture, is that rounded capping you have on the top row? One of them to match the rest would set you back a bob or two. Reading between the lines it sounds like a nice place you have there, can I be nosy and ask where are you planning on going to? Back to the Wall, great pic pity about the butty's, would like to see a bit more of the Wall though.

What a gorgeous wall! I love the colors and textures. Beautiful! I don't know why you'd want to muck it up with a bunch of bugs on the fly, anyway. Oh sure - they're pretty, but they're really just caterpillars with wings. Anyway - back to the wall - this would be a great shot to play around with! I would run it through all sorts of filters and see what kind of results I could come up with. It's perfect for manipulation work. So back to the wall . . .

Fantastic work here...I love the varied textures and colors you've captured. The subtle grade differences between earth tones totally rocks and I have to say that this is an image that sticks out quite a lot. Great work, and a great write up to accompany it.

Yes ... your wall has lots of character. BTW, please take the time to read "Stardust" by Neil Gaiman and illustrated by Charles Vess; or see the movie "Stardust" ... that story begins in a town named Wall.
