Description

Nikon 7900 image. I am rather fond of this species of spider. I think it is because I spent a lot of time last year watching one specific female Green Lynx spider. Over the summer, I watched her eat a variety of prey. I watched her get bigger and bigger until (in the early fall) she finally constructed an egg case and filled it full of eggs. I watched as she spent 24 hours a day guarding the eggs for weeks until they hatched, even to the exclusion of eating. I found this female Green Lynx Spider because I noticed the wasp that is shown in the pic. It seemed to be behaving rather erratically and upon a closer look, I realized it's odd movements were the result of being pulled into the jaws of this very efficient hunter. As I attempted to get a shot, the spider kept a firm hold on her prey but she kept backing deeper and deeper into the foliage where she had been hiding. Eventually she was so deep and I had my arm extended so far that I could no longer get a clear view of the camera's monitor. So essentially, this was a "blind shot". Actually, it is one of several dozen such shots, lol. I was surprised how many of them turned out to be usable. I decided to post this one because the eyes of the spider were so well depicted and because I liked the translucent look of her body as the sun illuminated her. I especially like the green "veining" visible just beneath the outer skin surface. Thanks to those who take the time to comment. Lee

This is what you call a mind blowing macro! Particularly under the conditions described in your narrative! You can see a lot of examples of various insects on flowers or twigs, but actually capturing one in the middle of dinner-- well, that's just damn unique and a very opportune shot! The tack-sharp level of detail in the focal range is absolutely perfect.

I think you should start your own magazine on little critters, you could well become a rival to National Geographic. Another fantastic macro and the narrative adds even more to the shot, the detail and clarity are superb. When I first saw it I thought 'blimey a radio active spider' I have never seen one like this before. After seeing your gallery(and I have seen every single picture) I think that I have been walking round with my eyes shut for the last 50 years. Thanks for opening them and for sharing this. Bravo!!!!!

Nice spider shot, and anything eating wasps is fine by me due to fact i was attacked by a nest of wasps when i was younger.

Someone help me shut my gaping mouth! I am totally amazed at this. The glow of the lime green is fabulous. I have never seen one this color light up so nicely and the detail is out of this world! Stellar!
