Title: Symphony No. 1, Red Dawn
Series: Symphony
Location: Studio
Date: July 26, 2007
Image: N06821M1c
Medium: Oil on canvas
Size: 36 x 36 inches (91.44 x 91.44 cm)
Technical notes: The painting was first laid out using acrylic paints in order to obtain the special relationship and that of colour. The lower half was first painted, as its range of warm colours was greater and needed to reflect specific emotions. The upper half was painted the following days, using four different hues of red that would not reveal their tonal quality until the painting was viewed up close. In order to achieve the perfect separation between the two planes, I laid down a wide strip of painters tape, which was removed right after finishing the upper half. Winsor & Newton Liquin Original was added to all the colours in order to achieve a glass-like surface and for the colours to be able to blend with one another. This product also allows for the paint surface to dry quicker. The brushstrokes blending through the colours are from the five coats of gesso I apply to all my canvases before painting and when using a 1 1/2 inch brush, they leave a wonderful fingerprint that reflects the artist temperament.
Commentary: This series was uploaded in reverse, so that it would be in the right viewing order when seen in the gallery. Sorry for the inconvenience.
As artists, regardless of the medium we employ, we grow at different speeds, reaching different levels over time. I had not painted in over five years, though I did start a painting two years ago, which remains still unfinished. Symphony No. 1 is my attempt at returning to abstract painting and represents a bridge between the past and that, which follows with Symphony No. 2 and No. 3, in which I am using new techniques and materials.
When one looks at these three paintings in the gallery, the sequence and their relationship between them becomes clear, their title is a road map to understanding each one on an individual bases. Yet I also confess that when I set out to do these abstracts, I was not thinking in terms of Day or Night, least of all the struggle between them.
From the safety of Red Dawn, I take a tactical stand, not looking back, nor abandoning my previous paintings, I forge forward into the unknown, from the light into the darkness of uncertainty with The Nocturnal Suite.
Thank you for taking the time to look at my work and commenting. Vielen danke das sie die Zeit genommen haben meine Arbeit zu betrachten und darauf zu Kommentieren. Egmont

Thank you Douglas for your simiplicity in words and I honestly wish you could see it in real life since so much of the various red tones do not appear as the yellow ones do. egmont

The way that this painting reveals more of itself the closer you get to it. The colours seeming simplicity, the texture. Not knowing any real words to say, I'll say I like it. Great work mate. ps. personally, I preferred the white background when viewed full, than the black background here.

So wonderful that just this composition met my color-hungry eyes, after the black image I made now in the morning. So interresting to follow your work with it through your words too.

I think this is superb Egmont, it immediately reminded me of Mark Rothko but your wonderful colours are much more vibrant than his. This looks so much better at full size I can imagine it is terrific to see the real thing. I love the simplicity and minimalism. Bravo!!

OHH DEAR! My fingers are starting itching for painting again YAY !.....This is lovely and very inspiring. :) Once I painted a little acryllic with only 2 colors..... well not just 2 colors, but sky and a rapefield, nothing else. It was such fun to making the colors play in many layers.....hmmm...could try that again ...:) Thanks for for making my fingers itch. I didnt paint on canvas for months. Though I am working on a Digital painting right now. :)

Beautifully done though I do feel it would have been nice to have shown a collage of them together.. The creation of them was perhaps in unison as they should be displayed... I bet they look splendid on the wall together!

Good evening, dear Egmont, Such warmth and light in this work. I like it very much :-) I would dearly love to see it in real. Gentle brush stokes and textures, like the gentleness of the dawn itself. At the same time powerful and strong. Your series has been wonderful. So good to read your notes too. Have a wonderful evening, my dear friend. Hugs. Diane.

the tonal qualities of the red are evident in your capture of your art..very radiant and excellent hues

all three stand up to scrutiny on their own, a set of problems over time can achieve fascinating results... these paintings challenge the eye's perception of depth and planar space. nice work!

Seen as a series and in the correct order, it clicks in my brain and I appreciate the previous ones more. From the warm bath of the lower section to the cooling expanse of red at the top, this painting draws me in with all the tiny minutae you no doubt intended while painting. Enjoy the journey!

I would also like to see the painting close up. Lovely use of texture and colour!

Beautiful translucency...It would be wonderful to be able to see this up close. I think a lot is being lost by us viewing this all-at-once and from a distance... :^( I have stated that I'm not a great fan of abstract painting, but you have clearly acheived the goals you set for yourself, and that's always a wonderful thing. Hope you will continue to paint, Egmont. It's always great to explore new avenues of self-expression...and the next time you pick up the camera, hopefully, you will also take this experience with you. Thank you for sharing...-M :^)
