Description

The word Shambles comes from an Anglo-Saxon word Shammels or Fleshammels literaly meaning Flesh shelves. The shambles was an open air Meat Market where the butchers would prepare and hang their meat from the Medieval wooden stuctures. York boasts that this is the most visited street in Europe ! Offal and blood would flow down the street and hygeine conditions would have been quite disgusting to people of today. There is a shrine to St.Margaret Clitherow located in Number 10 The Shambles. She met a gruesome Martyrdom for being a Catholic in a newly Protestant England in 1586 Thanks for taking a look. and thanks for previous comments.

Great capture. The connection of 'shambles' with the older connotation of a slaughterhouse/butchers' market is often forgotten. Not just a 'mess' as the meaning seems to have been watered down to, but a very special messy sort of mess! ;-)
