Description

I'd like to dedicate this one to my father, who became 78 today, and to my mother who became 76 in the end of July. The cornmill of Delfshaven, wich is now a part of Rotterdam, was build in 1727 and was named 'de distilleerketel' what means something like 'distillkettle'. It functioned well until 1899 when it was caught in a fire, but was restored, and worked on until 1922, when the milling was stopped because other ways of manufacturing malt were found. In 1940 due to world war two, it was burned down again. It stayed that way until the nineteen-eighties when the mill was restored with some of the old materials used for the council of Rotterdam wanted to restore a lot of Delfshaven into it's historic state. Unfortunately it couldn't rotate in it's original place so the people rebuilding it decided to replace it eleven meters away, and build it one meter higher so it wouldn't hit the nearby build houses when at work. At this time it is still in use and provides some nearby bakeries with malt. Good day all and much strength to those who had family or friends in the 9/11 disaster in New York. Thom

An incredible story of survival. The architecture was in the mind of the people even as it's destruction seemed dominant. Not a nihilist victory.

like the image very much and i am glad it was restored. only thing is that i call it a crime that they put those eyesores, which some call buildings beside it.

And a Happy Birthday to your Dad! Hope his day is wonderful! This is an awesome image. I like how it looks like it was done in pen and ink, and colored with water colors, very striking work! The history on this is excellent. I wish our town was more focused on restoration of historical sites. More often then not the sites are privately owned, allowed to go into disrepair until they are beyond reclamation, then the Historical Society becomes Hysterical .. but it's too late and the building has been torn down. Sigh. You are lucky to have such emphasis put on saving the beautiful old things.
