Description
For the past two weeks we have had the pleasure of hosting a houseguest of sorts. Every evening at dusk a rather large 1cm spider comes out from hiding and makes an exquisitely beautiful web at the entrance of our front door. There is an outside light on the door that we leave on for the first few hours of the evening, which attracts her flying entrée.
The first few times she would make the web covering entire entrance to the door. This created a problem for us. Having to continue to go in an out the door ourselves we tried only to cut the web strands we needed to get past. After the third evening of coming out and cutting portions of her web she started to NOT put up web strands across the entire door entrance but rather only one side, in essences leaving us a safe path to go though without damaging her web. Pretty smart spider if you ask me.
It has been fascinating to watch her spin her web every evening, like our very own National Geographic show in High Def. She can spin out a beautiful 2.5 ft diameter circular web in < 30 min Our daughter named her Patty and enjoys watching her do this almost every evening. I don’t know how long spiders live nor their life cycle however we will be a bit sad to see her gone when the cold weather starts.
