Description

I hope everyone is enjoying their weekend. It's been a while since I posted a picture of one of Toronto's Red Rockets so this evening I thought I would do so. Passing by the shops of the Beaches District, TTC streetcar 4246 is nearing its eastern terminus on the Queen Line (Route 501). The Queen Line is the longest streetcar route in Toronto running from Long Branch near the Mississauga border to the Neville Park loop just 500m short of the Scarborough border. Car 4246 will turn at a small loop (not originally designed for the long ALRV streetcars) on east side of the Beaches district. The Beaches is a very popular tourist and residential district in the east end of the old City of Toronto. The area gets its name due to the lovely Kew Beach and boardwalk on Lake Ontario about 1km to the south. I like to come down here from time to time as there are some very unique shops and restaurants to be found along this strip. It's also a beautiful area of the city to explore. Needless to say, I travel here by streetcar. The area is reminiscent of a small resort town. One that was inexplicably dropped into the centre of a major city. This notion is somewhat true because The Beaches was a place for family cottages and getaways from the dirty steam powered city back in the 19th century. But as time passed, Toronto grew around this district making it part of the city but fortunately not absorbing it. Thank you for taking a look. This is a fantastic shot as it shows the streetcar from an oncoming angle. The first image that makes me feel like the car is part of the trasit system. From the side it always seems like a museum piece. I really like this POV.

What a wonderful oasis in the middle of a congested urban environment. Nicely photographed, as always. Thanks for presenting this bit of history.

I always enjoy your TTC shots, especially when I can look at it and say "Hey I've been there before!" I like the history that you added as well. What you may not know is that as I understand it the line didn't stop at long branch back in the day, but rather went on all the way to Port Credit (in what is now the south central part of Mississauga). Back then that area was also cottage country, and in many ways has the same small town feel, and even some cottage like homes.
