Description
2.25 million light years away and closing on our galaxy at several hundred miles a second. Do not panic, it will not be colliding with us for another 5 billion years (thats a long time for those of you still using digital watches).
This is a complicated picture. Four pictures mosaiced with iMerge. Each quadrant is a stack of 40x3 minute exposures using an 80 mm telescope and an Orion Starshoot CCD camera. Post processing in Paintshop Pro X. Takes 8 hours to take the picture and another 8 hours to process, merge and adjust.
I am exhausted.

curious- is it really less dense on the left hand third? and what is the cloud layer along the top of the galexy? VERY neat picture :)
AstronomyMan
Curious is good. The cloudy band across the top is one of the spiral arms of the galaxy and is separated from the bulk of the stars by a dust band. Yes it always appears to be more dense on the left (in this picture).

Very nice. My curious is - How do you compensate for the movement blurring resulting from time exposure's on these distance shots?

Wow, fantastic, so beautiful.
