Description
I managed to sneak this photo of a street store/petrol station in Myanmar as I was riding in a rickshaw. I was surprised the shot even came out...as I had to keep the camera low and cross my fingers.
It is against the law in Myanmar to take pictures of these street-side petrol stations and I'll explain why.
First, though, note the three glass bottles standing on the shelves in the front of the store. The liquid in those containers is gasoline....not exactly the safest way to display the flammable fuel...and being in full sun in extremely hot weather, didn't add to to the comfort of being in close proximity.
This petrol is pretty much black marketed and is used primarily by scooter and motor cycle riders. One pulls up...grabs a bottle, fills up, hands the bottle back to the shop keeper who then sends it off to an unknown place (to me anyway) to be refilled and re-displayed.
Technically is is unlawful for them to sell fuel in this manner, but the government seems to turn a blind eye.
Tomorrow's photo will show you the living conditions of some of the poorer Burmese. These people were so gracious and welcoming...despite their circumstances.

Powerful Joelle. It is a great shot and especially so when thinking of the clandestine way you had to make it. When you told me of shark diving I thought you adventurous, now I truly know that you truly are.... Don't think I'll take that trip with you now. I might not get back home. (she is laughing). Seriously, please continue sharing these wonderful photographs. It is a great and informative series.
