Description

This is the Wattled Jacana... and this is the juvenile. The adults are a nice deep brown colour all over. This was taken on the same oxbow lake i took the shot of the Hoatzins a few shots back in my gallery and was hoping to get a glimpse of the giant otter. Following from Wikipedia: The Jacanas are a group of tropical waders in the family Jacanidae. They are found worldwide within the tropical zone. They are identifiable by their huge feet and claws which enable them to walk on floating vegetation in the shallow lakes that are their preferred habitat. The females are larger than the males; the latter, as in some other wader families like the phalaropes take responsibility for incubation, and some species (notably the Northern Jacana) are polyandrous. However, adults of both sexes look identical, as with most shorebirds. Food is insects and other invertebrates picked from the floating vegetation or the water's surface. For those of you who saw my monkey shot yesterday, sorry i forgot to identify it... i was under the impression it was a Saddle-Backed Tamarin, but now i am not so sure after a bit of a search for some info on them... and realising that i actually have a shot of the saddleback ready to upload... silly me: anyone care to venture an indentification? Well thanks for taking a looksie. Rich
