Description

This is for David, who loves architecture and history. His wonderful images inspired me to take these shots. .............. Providence Hospital was built in the early 1900s. The building was occupied in 1911, and has been in continuous use as a hospital ever since. In 2000, the facility was purchased by Swedish, and is now the Cherry Campus of Swedish Hospital. (That's why, when I was looking for Vaggabondd the other day, I ended up several blocks from where he was. Being from out of town, he naturally believed them when they told him he was at Swedish. To me, this will always be Providence!) Anyway - I digress. The insert in the left-hand image is a postcard from the 1920s that I snagged off the internet so you can see what the building originally looked like. The images are as follows: 1) Central and right-hand wings. 2) Roof detail, left wing. 3) Exterior detail, front of left wing. 4) Smokestack (not shown in 1920s postcard) If you compare the 1920s insert to the point of view of the photographs I took of the main building, you will deduce that I was standing in midair, approximately three floors up. You would be absolutely correct in that assumption. At some point in recent history, an addition was built onto the left wing of the building. The new wing is attached to the original building, so there are corridors in the new wing that are kind of eerie. There's wallboard on one side of the hallway, and the opposite wall is the exterior of the original building, complete with windows! .............. As always, I made this image nice and big so when you click on full view you'll be able to examine these pictures in greater detail.

What beautiful clarity of detail here, and set against that cool, clear sky, the effect is fantastic. Great stuff, and a very readable narrative too!

Well, as always, your huge full size views are virtually useless on my end, but I do like the architecture, colors, POV, sharp clarity and details depicted in this wonderful collage, Tara. Interesting information, also, on this grand edifice.
