Description
Nikon 7900 image.
I have a very comprehensive caterpillar identification book for my part of the world (Caterpillars of Eastern North America - by David L. Wagner) and it shows 593 different images of both moth and butterfly caterpillars with some info on most.
Despite looking thru it one image at a time on a number of occasions, I have not been able to decide what this little green caterpillar will turn into.
I have learned to pay attention to the number and location of legs and pro-legs as well as head size, number of body segments, colors and patterns; but the patterns can vary depending on which molting stage has been reached or simply because of local variations in the species. In addition to that, there are a number of different little green caterpillars that resemble each other quite a bit.
Despite the fact that I do know what to call him, I am thrilled to have managed to get his pic.

Looking at this and taking your finger as an indication of size, this caterpillar is minute. How you find them this small amazes me Lee, you must have the eye's of an hawk. Excellent capture and I would be as proud as punch to get a shot like this as well. Congratulations on the shot. Bravo!!!!!

Looks like what we used to call a watermelon bug. They would bore in by the stem and get sometimes halfway through. I don't know if they turned into anything else.
