Description
Court Square Park, downtown Memphis, Tennessee.
This historic park has existed at least since 1876, when the statue of Hebe (that's her on top of the water fountain) was dedicated here. She was the daughter of Zeus and Hera; the cupbearer of the gods who no doubt brought them wine. Cool job to have.
This small oasis in the middle of downtown office buildings also features a delightful gazebo (featuring free concerts every week) and of course, the beautiful bronze fountain located at the center.
In the 1960's, Court Square was often a gathering point for numerous civil rights demonstrations and marches that took place in downtown Memphis during those years.
Also, Court Square and the fountain appeared in the movie "The Firm" as a backdrop for a meeting between Tom Cruise and Gene Hackman.
