Description

I don't have a clue as to what this is, only that it is growing wild down near the River Roche. I think it belongs to the Orchid family. Thanks for stopping by for a look and for any comments you care to make. May the sun shine down on you where ever you are. For the curious amongst to all, what some thought was a poem is in fact a chorus from the song 'May the Bird of Paradise Fly up Your Nose'. Sung by none other than Little Jimmy Dickens and he performed this quite a few times at the 'Grand Old Opry' One fine day as I was a-walkin' down the street Spied a beggar man with rags upon his feet Took a penny from my pocket In his tin cup I did drop it I heard him say as I made my retreat CHORUS "May the bird of paradise fly up your nose" "May an elephant caress you with his toes" "May your wife be plagued with runners in her hose" "May the bird of paradise fly up your nose" The laundry man is really on his toes Found a hundred-dollar bill among my clothes When he called me I came a-runnin' Gave him back his dime for phonin' I heard him sayin' as I turned to go CHORUS I was way behind one day to catch the train Taxi driver said "We'll make it just the same" The speed cop made it with us And as he wrote out the ticket I stood by politely a-waitin' for my change CHORUS The lyrics are from http://www.cowboylyrics.com/lyrics/dickens-little-jimmy/may-the-bird-of-paradise-fly-up-your-nose-10376.html

I believe what you've got there, my dear, is Himalayan Balsam, one of the most invasive plants to ever hit your country. It's actually a member of the impatiens family. It grows profusely along rivers and streams, and chokes out the native vegetation. Since it's an annual, it dies back every year, leaving the banks of the waterway vulnerable to errosion. After the blooms die, the seed pods explode, sending seeds upwards of 7 meters. Each plant stalk will produce between 3,500 and 12,000 seeds. The only way to get rid of the stuff is to yank 'em out or kill them before they flower. But it's very pretty, and your photograph is beautiful! An excellent capture! :)

Yes Auntietk is quite correct,(please read her comment, she knows her stuff). I've wanted to find out about this plant for long time. Over here in the Rochdale Borough, there are a group of volunteers go out and help with the environment called The Green Gym. One of there painstaking jobs is to try and get rid of this stuff, although a pretty flower, and attracts a lot of Bees, it just takes over like over fed weeds, usually found near Rivers. your photo makes it look more pleasant. Good shot, I got your latest mail Jeff thanks.

I have something similar in my garden in 4 different colors. When the pods dry enough you can actually hear them pop as they toss their seeds a round. Great shot.
