Description

It's been a crazy couple of days here in Southern California. The wind blew in Saturday night with gusts up to 80 mph. It hasn't quit blowing yet, and will probably be here at least 1-2 more days. My poor husband had to get up on the roof to make some repairs (to keep from losing more shingles). When this wind is over there will be a heck of a clean up. There are pieces of the neighbors roof in my yard, as well as leaves and debris from who knows where! My poor plants and flowers are almost naked and gone! What 3 days ago was a beautiful, lush, blooming hibiscus bush is a sad, crinkly, dried out bush with half the leaves gone. I can't complain though, I still have my home. There are thousands here in Southern California who have been evacuated from their homes, and probably close to 100 homes have burned so far. I drove around my town this morning and took a few pictures. I would liked to have taken more, but the winds were horrible, and the air quality was awful... There were trucks upside down and sideways, trees, downed power lines; debris of all sorts, dirt, rock, ash, all flying through the air (I expected to see animals and small children next...) So I went back home. ~Prayers for all the families~ P.S. That's not snow on the mountain (I believe it's ash). Compare it to "Waiting..." Waiting Try full-view.

Good but somber variety of photos in this collage of the havoc created in our Southern California by those horrific Santa Ana winds and fierce, uncontrollable firestorms as they destroy everything in their path. I live 18 freeway miles southeast of downtown Los Angeles and, ironically, we haven't had any winds down here at all. No particles of ash, nothing. There is haze north of us but that's about all we can see of the effects of the firestorms.

I spent a few months in So Cal over 25 years ago, and was there through one Santa Ana season. That has to have been one of the weirdest things I've ever experienced. It's really unimaginable. Excellent images - the one of the palm trees, with their tops blowing sideways, was the one that reminded me so strongly of my time down there. Thanks for going out and taking these photos. Awesome work. Take good care!

We have been watching our southern state kin closely up here in Sacramento. Wildfires are always a threat but with the wind as it has been, it really has become a horror.

Thanks for posting this collage of Natures indiscriminate power. Excellent work but I also have great sympathy for the trauma you and your family and neighbours are going through. Hope you are soon back to some normality.

Greetings Melinda, A wonderful collage and reporatage as to the current crises that seems to hit Southern California every few years. We are up here in Northern california and I certainly remember the Oakland fires which were not to far from where my wife once worked. Apart from possible wild fires in our neighborhood, we are also faced with the usual shake, rattle and roll of the earth, as we live on one of the fault lines. Thank you for sharing. egmont

I really like your collage even if it doesn't fit onto my screen. The images work well as a photographic essay. As I viewed it noticing the semi-trailers lying on their sides the words "Peak Oil" strongly came to mind. No doubt you get earthquakes too.
