Description

Abraham Darby III. completed the Worlds first Iron Bridge in 1779 and dominates the landscape here in Telford Shropshire,UK. His Grandfather Abraham Darby I a god fearing Quaker and Master of the local ironworks had in 1709, perfected a way to use plentiful coke rather than expensive charcoal, to smelt iron. The sudden abundance of iron unleashedthe country's natural inventiveness;soon the dicovery would fuel Britains Industrial Revolution. There was a Toll to cross the bridge. various charges were incurred, eg. For every Coach,Landau,Hearse,Chaise,Chair or such like carriages drawn by six, Horses, Mares, Geldings or Mules Two Shillings. It went on to list various charges for all kinds of Animals and of course people. a sheep calf pig or lamb was 1/2 old Penny. A note at the bottom of the Toll said. NB. This bridge being Private Property, every officer or soldier, whether on duty or not, is liable to pay toll for passing over as wel as any luggage waggon, mail coach or the ROYAL FAMILY. As we arrived in Telford on our visit to the Ironbridge Gorge Museums The bridge was clouded by thick fog. And thanks for all comments.

I just new I should have taken my camera out of the car and gone down there with you. This is an exceptional picture Alan, the mist rising of the river gives it real mood and I know for a fact it was very cold. The narrative also holds just the right amount of information. I like how you capitalised the Royal Family. That bit really interested me, finding out that even they had to pay to cross. This is going straight to my favourites M8. Nice one. Bravo!!!!!5+5+

A beautiful work is this, I would rather say a beautiful art work. The photograph is very beautiful, I like the fog in it..it makes the photo a lot more mysterious.

Wonderful shot! And the history lesson is great, too! I didn't realize anything like this existed! Thanks for sharing!!!! I agree with iaacf about the fog -- it adds such character to the photo as well as to the bridge! Fantastic! :^)

Excellent early-morning(?) capture. Or it may be just the mist/fog that makes it look that way. In any case, it adds just the right amount of mystery here. A relic from bygone days. Interesting is how the old 'industrial' look was often an artform in itself. As much engineering and time was probably spent on making it attractive, as on making it functional.
