Description

Death Valley Dunes, Sinuous sculptures of sand 3/6 In May / June 2007 we made a trip through California with a RV-Motor-home. One of the many highlights was Death Valley. Death Valley is an unique, but very hot place in the US. Early in the morning we made a hike for a couple of hours exploring the sand dunes 9CLOSE TO Stovepipe Wells), including climbing the tops of a few of them. Light was that morning a little bit strange, with some haze in the direction towards the mountains. I made a few photo’s and 6 of them I have turned into a duo-tone in the following way. After adjusting the full color in the normal way with Photo-Shop, I converted the photo into a black & white by using the mode: Greyscale. If required , I did some tuning in this phase. The B&W image is converted with Photo-Shop into a “Duo-tone” with the following settings. Ink 1, Black Ink 2, Pantone 453C If required some fine tuning can be made in this phase as well. As final touch, a simple frame for the series of photo’s. By means of this selection / conversion in photo-shop, the amount of white is strongly reduced and the photo turned into a “warmer toned” photo, at least in my opinion and fit for purpose aiming at a more abstracted view on this warm place early in the morning!! Hope you like it, Your comments are highly appreciated, Have a very nice week Henk

The jagged peaks of sand in the back are great. The soft turning of sand near the front is comforting. Great shot!

The desert is really one of my favorite landscapes... but no so easy to capture, as I experimented recently myself in the Moroccan Sahara (shots to be upload...) Here you did an excellent job, Henk : I love these curves... and the B&W conversion fits also perfectly ! 98.gif

Yes I do like it !!. I think the almost dual tone setting ads a lot to the picture, expecially when I realize that the light was not thet good at the the you were there.

I'm loving this dune series. Always been a big fan of dunes and play of light and shadow on such simple landscapes, though. :) Richard

Spectacular image. The use of duo tone is indeed wonderful. The texture of the sand dunes is so smooth and soft and contrasts well with the their angular peaks. The faint wind left its rippling effect on the sand, cleverly erasing any trace of visitors – leaving the locale as though pure and untouched for the viewers to come. Great photograph indeed. Bravo.
