Description

An Interceptor Sqdn rush forward to establish a fighter screen as the Carrier Group (a Carrier escorted by two Assault Frigate) proceeds toward its objective... Rendered in C4D with GI, Sky and Pyroclastic. No Postwork. The halos from the ships' engines are obtained using volumetric lights. These models are from the Homeworld2 game, reworked in Lightwave by Fabio (thank You!) and imported into C4D. They came out just perfect, with wonderful textures correctly mapped. I used an import scale of 2 and meters as units (the resulting dimensions are realistic-to-large, I think, a good approximation to begin with). You can DL the models for free at Lightwave Goup v3 (http://www.lwg3d.org/v3/index.php). BTW, for me it was interesting to experiment the combination Pyroclastic-Sky. To have both rendered I embedded the Interceptors' trails in a cube with the Pyroclastic Volumetric shader tag. The enviroment object was used for the Sky shader, and You just can't have two environments in a scene ;^)... Thanks & Regards! Stefano

Very cool sci-fi image, friend... 5 Stars! Complimenti, una scena molto dinamica ed interessante. La serie di Homeworld è una delle mie preferite, ottimo lavoro con i modelli ben rilavorati in LW!

Thank You all, folks ;^)! Concerning the trails (which were the main focus of this experiment!): each fighter has a particle emitter in its tail, actually reproducing the shape of its nozzle. Also it has a turbulence and, more relevant a spot light. The latter is pointed backward and it affects just the pyroclastic particles of the corrisponding emitter (scene panel: include mode, the said emitter). I used an inverse square decay (radius 100m) with a red-yellow hue (=15). I think this decay profile, combined with the hue, results very effective in this picture: the wash out near the nozzle progressively reveals its hue as the gas flows away from the fighters... By this I don't have to use age effects in the pyroclastic material -- it's the light to do it for me ;^)! Emitter, turbulence and light are parented to the corrisponding fighter (of course I set one up and then copied it to build up the squadron, the latter being a null object to which the fighter are parented). I then set up a little animation for the squadron itself, just three keys to yield this curve. A post note: there's an error in my set up, in that I did forget to set different seeds in the emitters, that's why the trails in my picture are, very unrealistically, identical! :( Also, building on, I was considering to put another spot light behind the fighters, pointing forward and affecting just the corresponding interceptor. With the right parameters this could give me a faked GI: the light from the heated exausts to the fighter... Thanks again, regards Stefano
