Description

This picture is based on a fable I wrote; There once was an eagle who was convinced that he was the greatest animal in all Creation. He flew the highest and fastest, and was the most ruthless hunter of all the eagles. "Everyone is below me!" he would boast. One morning he met a bleary-eyed owl, who was just about to go to sleep. "I am a better hunter than you!" the eagle boasted. "But we rule the night," the owl replied sleepily. The eagle decided he couldn't let this rest, so later that day he slept in his eyrie, then woke up just as the sun set. He flew far and wide, trying to work out which of the strange night-animals was the greatest challenge to hunt. He raced the bats, swooped at foxes and badgers, and sent rabbits and hares scurrying for their burrows. “Too easy!” he said to himself, “All too easy!” He met the owl again, who was wide awake by now. “Which is the most challenging night creature to hunt?” the eagle asked. “Why, it’s over there, by that tree!” the owl replied, nodding the direction as he flew, “none of us owls have ever caught one of those fireflies!” Sure enough, when the eagle looked, his sharp eyes saw a tiny point of brilliant light, darting through the branches. “I’ll catch it!” the eagle boasted, and set off in hot pursuit. For mile after mile, the firefly raced, with the eagle just behind. At every twist and turn, the eagle swept forward to catch the firefly, but it always seemed to slip away. Round and round, higher and higher the pair chased, long into the night. Finally, with a tremendous rush of speed, the eagle swooped down on his prey, and swallowed it in one gulp. “Yes!” he shouted, “Firefly, I’ve put out your light! Owl, I’ve out-hunted you! I’m the king of the sky, and the king of the night as well! Everyone is below me!” “Oh, really?” came a voice from above. The eagle looked around in amazement; who could be up there talking to him? It was the Moon, gazing down at him and laughing. “My sisters the stars, my brother the Sun, and even I myself are above you, not because we are better, but because God put us here. We know our places, and keep to them.” “But I’ve put myself at the top of everything on Earth!” the eagle protested, “and I got here all by myself!” “Indeed you did,” the Moon replied, “but the owl is not such a fool as you think; he knows the creatures of the night. The firefly you caught and ate is poisonous. You snuffed out his light, but in return he will snuff out yours. Tonight you may look down on all the World, but tomorrow you will die, and all the World will look down on you!" Moral: do not look down on others, or you will surely fall.
