Description

Dust storms usually occur in Arizona during the monsoon (early July to mid-September) and are the result of outflow from distant thunderstorm cells often more the 100 miles away. The resultant dust cloud is called a 'Haboob' and can reach heights of over 1000m and widths of 20 to 30km. When they arrive they can reduce visibility to zero and have resulted in massive collisions on the freeways. This particular dust storm occurred on 10 March 2006 and wasn't that big or severe as dust storms go. Visibility was reduced briefly to about 10 to 20-ft. but it brought an end to a 142-day period without measurable precipitation. The rain that followed wasn't much, just a trace, but it messed up the cars. The more significant event that occured was that after only two pictures the shutter mechanism of my camera jammed and I had to sent it in for repairs. Luckily it was still under warranty and I only had to pay for shipping. Thanks for viewing and comments on my previous upload! Have a nice week!!

A great shot but costly to your camera. I wouldn't like to be driving while one of these storms hits you.

Fantastic and rare shot! One can see only almost impenetrable dusty cloud and that track, but what an expression! Stunning image!
