Description

A marae is a sacred place which served both religious and social purposes. The cleared land of a marae is generally rectangular in shape and is bordered with stones and sometimes has terraces. In the Society Islands of Tropical Polynesia most marae were abandoned or destroyed after the arrival of the first members of the London Missionary Society in 1797. The old pracices of the Polynesians were discouraged in their effort to convert them to Christianity. In recent times some of the marae have been restored and have become attractions for tourists and archaeologists. The areas of the marae are still considered sacred. This picture was taken in April 2001 and was later scanned. This marae is located below the Belvedere Lookout on Moorea. Thank you for viewing and commenting on my last upload. Good Night! This is an excellent introduction into something I was totally unaware of. You've made it so interesting with your information and this wonderful photo. Now I am intrigued and I'll have to go in search of more reading on the subject. Thanks!

It is interesting, that the shape of marae resembles pyramides of Mayan Civilization. It is possible that both cultures are related with each other. Thanks for sharing.

A beautiful capture and most interesting narrative, Sig!I like when a photo 'speaks' to those like me who are too much obsessed with the facilities of modern life, and forget about the essential , us before life and its secrets. That's probably what the people here tried to do when building those 'marae'. Thank you for sharing !
