Description

Capybara (Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris, known as carpincho in Spanish and capivara in Portugueseis the largest rodent still in existence in the world, related to guinea pigs, agouti, coyphillas and chinchillas. Its common name, derived from Kapi¿va in the Guarani Indian language, means "Master of the Grasses" while its scientific name, hydrochaeris, is Greek for "water hog." Capybaras have heavy, barrel-shaped bodies and short heads with reddish-brown fur on the upper part of their body that turns yellowish-brown underneath. Adult Capybaras may grow as long as 130 centimetres (4.3 ft) and 50 centimetres (1.6 ft) tall, weighing up to 65 kilograms (140 lb). Capybaras have slightly webbed feet and no tail; their back legs are slightly longer than their front legs and their muzzles are blunt with eyes, nostrils, and ears on the top of their head. Capybaras have a total of 20 teeth. Females are slightly heavier than males. Though now extinct, there once existed even larger capybaras that were eight times the size of modern capybaras (these rodents would have been larger than a grizzly bear). This photograph has been taken in Burgers Zoo Arnhem.

I'm amazed. I didn't know the capybara was this large. I thought it was smaller like out javelina which is about 50-55 pounds grown. Its a peccary so I just assumed it was about the same size. A great shot and the high (goose-stepping) duck is funny. If it twists just right it can boot that big rodent in the beeeeeeeee-hind. LOL

What an interesting shot. It is like a rodent in the front and body but the feet look like a pig. What an amazing animal. Great shot too.
