Description

Nikon 7900 pocket camera - hand held image. Here is another little critter with feathery antenna. It is the size of a very large mosquito and makes a buzzing sound very similar to them as well. Despite such similarities to mosquitoes, these don't bite (not even the females, lol). I had a bit of a difficult time in identifying this guy but finally was successful and thereby managed to find the answer to a question posed by a friend. Several weeks ago, this friend of mine had asked me if I had ever seen red mosquito larvae. He had found some in his little gold fish pond. I had not but said I would see what I could find out. I had no luck until I found the ID and some info for the Midge. Turns out they have red larvae that are commonly called 'blood worms". Thanks to those who take the time to comment. Lee

This is spectacular, Lee! I've got the bloodworms, but never known what the adults look like. Thankyou for the info and a stunning and beautiful shot.

This is absolutely fantastic Lee, I know the size of these little critters as my pond is full of blood worm, when I clean out the filters they come out on clumps. The good part about them is the fish love them as part of their diet. Fishermen here in the UK and in Europe pay pretty good prices for them as bait. I have loads of midges around the pond especially in the summer when they hatch but I have never given a thought to photography with them as the subject because they never stay still long enough. Excellent capture! Great detail for something so small. Bravo!!!!! Thanks for the mail.

I have wondered what those thin worms were in my pond! You are a genius, Lee! I don't know how you find this information! I get so frustrated I give up quickly. This is a great shot of a midge. I do know about them although they are so small and so active I have never really looked closely at them before. Wow. Now I have!
