Description

These guys are about the size of your pinkie's nail... very cute little things. I was walking around outside the house in Peru and saw a little stem which was all bobbled and seemed to be moving. It was completely covered with these things... there must have been about 50 of them literally covering this thing. So i had a bit of a shoot with my macro lens. This was the favourite of the lot. Not entirely happy with the focus plane but you cant have everything now can you... Enjoy! Rich

WOW, that's amazing! Really, that's a very nice shot, of some interesting critters! Don't you just love being in the right place at the right time? I know I love it when that happens--nicely done!

Fascinating creatures and a wonderful shot! I think the focus is just fine. I would not thought it could be better, unless you told us so. ;)

Very cute and very interesting colours! Are they poisonous, because usually in nature yellow and black is a sign for poison:)!!! Awesome capture!!!

I think the yellow and black is one of those false warnings (cant imagine a grasshopper being poisonous) - i imagine these are juvenile of the species (further evidence in the fact that they were grouped together - protection?). Unless anyone can come up with an identification :)

Amusing pic Rich, they remind me of the lubber grasshopper we have here in Florida which cluster together by the hundreds after a hatch. They are black with gold markings in the juvenile stage. I usually think about stomping than taking pictures. The lubber start small but end up huge, 3-4 inches long and love amarylis bulbs and leaves. Maybe I will click before stomping next spring.

Great shot, especially since you have told us how small they are! That is a wicked coloring and very imposing stance of the three together!

Cool shot!..I like it! They do in fact look like warriors entering battle, LOL! Yes, focus on macros can be difficult....but here you seem to have focussed on the eye of the middle hopper, which is perfect! Can't do much to get around the limited dof...we are all faced with the same problem.
