Description

High Water at Low Tide ( and a bit of history) Last week we had our first autumn storm of the year over Holland. Due to the real storm in the middle of the Northsea we had at the same time very high water levels, the highest since 30 years. At the time I took the photos, is was more or less low tide, and normally, in front of the bench, there is a wide sandy beach!! With a normal high tide the sea will not reach this bench!! Photo is taken from the Hondsbossche Zeewering the only dike on the west coast of Holland!!! For a couple of miles this part of the dunes, which are protecting Holland from the sea, disappeared in two steps. Step 1, the Saint Elisabeth flooding / storm in 1421, well before the Americas where discovered. Step 2, the All-Saints flooding / storm in 1570. Since the flooding, this area in the North of Holland, south of Petten, is protected by a dike which has been changed over the ages. The actual shape has been given in 1981. It was only a 7 hours after the high tide and still a lot of wind, to hold your camera steady was mission impossible. The second photo is taken, with the sun in my back towards Petten, the village you can discover alongside the dike!! Thanks for your time Have a very nice weekend Henk

This is so interesting. I've never seen something like this before. I don't really understand how and why it is designed this way but obviously it works... maybe we ought to look at this closer to protect some of our low-lying areas. Great shot!

Excellent capture! I believe the projecting blocks are there to break up the force of the wave on the dike.

Nice shots and great to have the history. here in East Anglia we had similar problems with the hight tides but Colchester escaped any problems.

Thank you for the history, Henk. I wonder what this will be like when the ocean is 10 meters deeper. A scary thought.
