Description

Holland behind the Hondsbossche Zeewering Last week we had our first autumn storm of the year over Holland. Due to the real storm in the middle of the Northsea we had at the same time very high water levels, the highest since 30 years. Photo is taken from the Hondsbossche Zeewering the only dike on the west coast of Holland!!! For a couple of miles this part of the dunes, which are protecting Holland from the sea, disappeared in two steps. Step 1, the Saint Elisabeth flooding / storm in 1421, well before the America’s where discovered. Step 2, the All-Saints flooding / storm in 1570. Since the flooding, this area in the North of Holland, south of Petten, is protected by a dike ( = Hondsbossche Zeewering) which has been changed over the ages. The actual shape has been given in 1981. The area behind the dike is well below sea level. It was only a 7 hours after the high tide and still a lot of wind, to hold your camera steady was mission impossible. For more details, please see also my yesterday upload Thanks for your time Have a very nice weekend Henk

The more I learn about this country and its flood protection, the more fascinated I become. Excellent shot.
