Description

The Endeavor is one a half-dozen steamboats that makes regular runs on the Miracle River. It is a source of goods, trade items, cargo of all types, and transportation for the residents along the river. It is not a powerful boat; when going upstream it barely makes more than two or three miles per hour. It may be slow, but it is reliable. As [pictured here, the Endeavor is headed downstream, so it is travelling considerably faster. Young Fern is the only passenger on this leg of the river. She is going to Revival City to visit her favorite aunt. It is her first time away from her own village, so Fern is filled with a both anticipation and dread of what the city will be like. Meanwhile, she is enjoying watching the sights as the Endeavor steams downstream. ________________________________________________________ CREDITS: Bryce 6.1 Poser 6.0 Packet: Most of it modeled in Bryce, but the hull and decks were created by Anthony Appleyard's freebie boat construction kit. I flattened the original hull to something approximating a riverboat hull. Water froth and splashes are by Forester (Renderosity, http://www.expandingwave.com). The bags are also by her. The steam engine is the engine from the "Jungle Queen Safari Boat" by KuroKuma (DAZ). Same for the gin crates and bottles. Wood stacks are a Net freebie. The all the men figures are Apollo Maximus by Anton. Female figure is Stephanie Petite 3 from DAZ. Chest is a Net freebie and the calves were modeled and textured by Debra Ross at Vista Internet. House is by by Bjorn Lindholm and the Old Watermill was modeled by vikike176. I totally retextured it using material from photographs by franontheedge. Trees are by Foleypro. Water and terrain mats by Jonathan Allen. Thanks for looking and comments are appreciated. Jeremy

Great scene! I love all the detail (cargo and such) on the boat. Now I'm not a riverboat expert, but just one question: should it be riding that low in the water? Looks like the deck would be swamped by any little wave.

In answer to geirla, the answer is yes. Riverboats--at least in America's rivers of the 19th Century--were very shallow draft boats. They had to be because of all the sand bars and in order to beach safely. Since the Endeavor's hull happens to be metal, rather than wood, it would probably be a bit closer to the water as shown. Some ways in which it differs from packets of those days is that most had a narrow fold up bridge at the bow, plus a crane or lift for cargo of some sort.

Also the POV makes it look a bit closer than it actually is.

I was just going to say that you are really getting good at wakes and spray etc now, then I noticed you said you used some of my textures, I feel so chuffed! How nice. I was also going to say I like the way you've got the greyish cast of the river water to suit the ambient lighting in the scene.

Great image - the atmosphere is quite nice and the wake effect is very well done.

A well constructed and rendered scene - could be a scene out of Huckleberry Finn (though the river is a little small for that!). Very peaceful - well done!

Fantastic modelling, as always. You really do a realistic job of creating models. This is an excellent scene.

Wonderful detail! And we all love paddle boats. I noticed the trees seem to have a bit of fuzz to them, which gives a nice feeling of distance, but the millhouse on the shore still seems relatively sharp. Not sure if that was intentional or not. Speaking of the use of haze for perspective, I would love to see a similar scene with morning mists and what not.
