Description

This is a shot of the USS Hornet Scoreboard that hangs in it's hangar bay. Well...it's actually a replica of it as I just learned in flipping through the book I purchased in the gift shop. The original hangs in Pensacola Fl in the National Museum of Naval Aviation. While the Hornet wasn't solely responsible for the sinking of the Japanese battleship Yamato, it is credited in being the first to strike it. This Hornet (CV-12, later CVS-12) was actually the second Hornet carrier to fight in WWII. The first, CV-8, was sunk in the vicinity of the Santa Cruz Islands. in October 1942. In November 1943 the CV-12 was commissioned and served for 15 continuous months, a timeframe unequaled by any other ship. The only reason she didn't finish the war fighting was that she was damaged in a typhoon in June of 1945. Before that though she managed to shoot down more enemy plans and sink or damage more enemy shipping than any other WWII carrier. John
