Description

As we descend from Mauna Ulu, we see in the far distance the Pu'u O'o crater sending a mass amount of clouds in the air called VOG (Volcano Pollution-volcano fog). Pu'u O'o had sent much lava to the ocean in the past where much of our lava hike was from. But for the moment, it only gasses. In this image, the unusual wind conditions were sending the VOG towards the Mountain View area where Lady Carrie lives. The Vog does affect her as well as many of the residence around that area. The Mountain View Elementary School had kept the kids inside with doors and windows closed because of the high levels of sulfur dioxide emission into the air. Trade-winds were expected and hopefully it cleared the VOG, sending it towards the ocean. Just beyond Pu'u O'o are the newly formed fissures (elongated cracks on the slopes of the volcano) erupting and sending new lava towards the town of Pahoa about 8 to 10 miles away. There is no immediate danger as the lava is moving very slowly. We are keeping a careful watch on the lava movement as Dave aka Punaguy lives in that direction. Stay safe my friend. Aloha and thank you for viewing. HAPPY THANKSGIVING

I have always loved your lava pictures, and so it is here, too. Thanks for sharing it with us. The pic shows good the lava structures, which is from interest for a geologist like me. The steam of the vulcano in the background gives adramatic mood. Thanks for your information, I´ve known the U´u o´o only from zwo TV films, which I kept on a video cassette

I was just reading about VOG last week when I pulled up the pages for the volcano webcams! I hope a fair breeze in the right direction clears it out to keep everyone safe to enjoy a happy holiday~ Nice capture here, it still amazes me to see the bits of greenery in the lava! Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family too!

amazing how quick life can return to the lava beds.I know it is rich in minerals needed for plants.I would love to visit Hawaii but I would be hesitant to live close to an active volcano.beautiful capture Errol

Wow, gas mask territory! I didn't know there was such a thing as VOG. Terrific lighting and texture effects in this shot of the lava, which kind of reminds me of tar. Incidentally, I read recently that 25% of the pollution over Los Angeles comes from China. Something to really choke over.

This certainly brings back memories! It looks so desolate, but being there it's beautiful with all the different colors and textures, both large and small scale. Excellent shot, Errol.

I wondered from the title if VOG was related to fog, thanks for explaining that as well as posting this superb capture.
